Down to the Kitchen Caroling

Norman Rockwell*

Down to the kitchen caroling Granddad goes,

allspice, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves

drawing his nose along “ding, dong…through the snow.”

Grandmom’s baking cookies, rolling dough,

and basting a stuffed turkey, her cheeks aglow.

There’ll be mulled cider, egg nog, hot cocoa

with whipped cream and marshmallow.

Christmas Is…Percy Faith on the Hi-Fi stereo,

Bing’s ‘White’ and Elvis’ ‘Blue’ also.

Like Santa’s Ho-Ho-Ho that no one ever outgrows,

we’ll always be grand kids in the kitchen, to and fro,

our warm hearth-fire hearts staying lit within, I know!

Up with the Poinsettia, and grow,
Up with the Holly and Ivy;
Up with the Mistletoe,
Evergreen, all

Up the bunk bed ladder, with a hop,
Little Susie met three angels at the top…

*“Here they come, Mom! And Jim won’t need the wish-bone — they’ve got their PLYMOUTH!” Norman Rockwell Chrysler Corporation Plymouth magazine ad 1947
