The North of Up

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

East, West, and especially
South, declared North
The ultimate of up,
A mouth, a cup,
Something back-and-forth,
Something best bequeathed.

I stretched and spun,
Made myself into a bowl, but
Became a ball, holed, yet whole.
I fetched until undone,
Everything bouncing back,
Everything numb and none.

In all directions,
Downtrodden dreams,
A universe averse
To humankind, or
Anything humane,
Anything kind.
